p1740
I have a 2000 Dodge Ram, 2WD, 5.2. This is my first time posting on here so I will be as detailed as possible, I apologize if I overdo it.
I replaced the transmission, 46RE, with one that was pulled from a running truck, and it was running like new for the first 2 weeks. Then, one day I was driving and the O/D kicked off and the TRANS TEMP came on… I immediately pulled over and checked for codes (the on-off 3 times trick) and the only code it gave was the speed solenoid (can’t remember the actual code), so I drove it easy to where I was going, let it sit and cool, (before I left I noticed that the pan was leaking fluid so I checked the level and made sure it was good before I headed home).
The first half of the way home it was driving great, like nothing ever happened, then the O/D OFF light come on and the TRANS TEMP light shortly after. I got it home and replaced the speed solenoid, along with replacing the trans fluid pan (the original was slightly dented from the trans jack when I was putting the trans in), the gasket, and filter. After I did this it ran fine back and forth to work, with no codes.
The other day I was driving on the highway and the lights came on again…. This time I checked it and it was the p1740…. And I have no idea where to start with this. It will drive fine for the first 15-20 min, then the lights will come on.
I don’t have the money right no to take the truck to a trans shop for them to charge me who knows how much… so I would like to try to fix what I can to eliminate some possibilities first if I can, then if need be I will take it to a shop.
**NOTE** When I replaced the pan and filter the other day, I noticed there was no magnet in the pan… that was my oversight when I put the trans in, I know, I should have taken the pan off and changed the filter then (if I had I would have noticed there was no magnet)… but I just wanted to note that, idk the lack of magnet for two weeks could have done something.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

you're getting hot, as evidenced by the o/d popping off first, and then the trans temp dummy light..
you have a flow issue.. it's not flowing right.. most likely it's because of the check valve.. delete that rascal.. search forum for "check valve delete mod"...
the fluid in the trans is likely spent.. you need to replace it asap.. teh best way to get it ALL out and fresh in is NOT a flush.. for the love of all that's holy, don't flush it..
open up about 12 quarts and sit them within grasp.. pull the low pressure return line from the radiator, point it at a bucket.. fire the engine, put it in neutral.. try to pour in the fluid as fast as it's coming out.. when it starts to come out clear, you've likely got it where you need it..
seeing as how you are driving it on bad fluid, though, a rebuild may be in your future..

quick question tho, should i go ahead and replace the od solenoid, or the pressure boost valve cover plate (longest part name ever lol) or try this first and worry about that later?
