Default Automatic transmission Identification Expert Needed

I have searched high and low for a way of determining exactly which transmission I have in my truck. For several weeks now I was under the impression I had the 47re. Now I read something on this site that makes me believe I may have the 46re.

Would there by chance be an automatic transmission expert on this site that can explain to me exactly how to read the numbers on my truck or tranny so that I can fully understand and determin exactly which automatic I have.

My Ram is a 1998 8.0L four wheel drive.

I removed the tranny today and found a number located above the oil pan on the drivers side that reads like this.

PK52119519AA 3249 2154

This number is on the bell housing --- 238 - 4
The Od unit has these numbers ---- 19104 and above it is this number 70160.

Fellers I would appreciate some one who is not guessing but actually knows what they are talking about to jump in here and educate me.

I am wanting to get started rebuilding this thing but would love to know exactly what I am working on before digging into it.

Thank You in Advance

Should indeed be the 47RE. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TorqueFlite#A618

46RE is the usual 318/360 Tranny, they barely hold up in a V8, they wouldn't survive a V10.

"47RE
A renamed second-generation A618. A heavy-duty A727 with overdrive and electronic control.
Applications:
1996-2002 Dodge Ram 2500/3500 Diesel/V10"

Well, it is indeed a 47re as stated. And if you don't want to go to the dealer, you can get a build sheet online with all the info about your truck. http://www.dodge.com/wccsapp/univers...ull&category=U

Thanks every one.

I am now certain that I do have the 47RE.

I have it on a bench in my garage getting ready to dig into it.

I hope it`s as simple as the book I bought shows it to be.

A few days ago after reading the rebuild manual which covers about four of those transmission which are all similar and all require the same tools; I went on line and found every one of the necessary tools with exception of the piece needed to compress the 800 pound spring. The tools I bought was at a huge discount. The tool needed to compress the 800 pound spring I am going to fabricate out of an old drive shaft I cut into years ago for another project. I`ll cut some reliefe`s in the tube and use quarter inch top and bottom plates with quarter inch reinforcement strips on the sides of the tubing. I am lucky enough to have a Miller Mig welder which should come in handy on this project.

I filled out the online request for the build sheet on my truck. I figure it`s going to take me a day or so to get my tranny apart and everything cataloged. Maybe the build sheet will be back by the time I need to order my parts.

I will keep every one posted as to how this build goes and whether or not it works after I am done.

I have mechaniced for a little over fourty years but I have never been inside of an automatic tranny of any kind. Looks like I am about to get an education.

I want to thank every one that chimed in on this thread it was indeed a help.
