yes and no.
transmissions that have not been serviced develop a heavy layer of sludge on everything on the inside. new fluid with new detergents dissolve most of the sludge and put it back in suspension (and motion). there is a school of thought that this leads to filter blockage and transmission failure. i think this is true.

i think this can be turned into a positive by doing 2 filter and fluid changes about 1-2 weeks apart. plus, a pan drop will only remove about 1/2 or 2/3 of the fluid, with a significant amount left in the TC, cooler, valve body, etc. also remove the pesky check valve in the cooler line. also thoroughly clean the inside of the pan of all sludge.

i think that new atf fluid is always better than old nasty atf fluid, but you have to be careful to let it stop up and overheat and die.

my 2 cents
