nasty noise from the rearend!
got an 01 Ram Sport 4X4 offroad pkg auto. for 4.10 gears from the factory. my problem is .. is that when i go into revers regardless of it being warmed up or cold. i hear kind of a grinding tapping noise, rythmic and it lessens when i make turns in revers. and when i go into drive it feels like the tranny slips but actually feels and sounds like its from the rear pumpkin. took the pumpkin down a while ago when i first noticed it and , (to the untrained eye like my own) i didnt see anything out of the unusual. like shavings are chunks of metal. anything thoughts on my problem? p.s. im pretty sure i got LSD. b/c when i got the weels straight and the truck is straigh and i mash the gas , i both wheels spin but when im in a turn one weel will spin untill i even out. not sure if thats how it saposed to be... i know nothing about drivetrains.... trannys and differentials and rear and front ends are not my bag.. im more electrical, audio, engine tweeker
To find out if it is a posi, the next time you lift the back end off the ground have someone spin one of the rear tires forward, if the other rear tire spins the same direction, you have posi, if they spin opposite directions, you have an open rear.
They spin in opposite directions if you have LDS too. But if your diff is making a wierd noise whoever changed the fluid might have forgotten to put the LDS friction addative in there. I guess you can try that, they have it at most auto stores, if I remember right its called Trac-Loc and its under $10. Just poor it in there then go to an open parking lot or something and make 8-10 small figure eights to really get the addative maving around.
So that additive not being in there could damage the rear end? So is it something i should go out now and get and add it in? how much a full bottle? thanks fellas!!!!!!
