I wondered the same thing....

If a tranny goes bad, it is typically worn frictions, bands etc. This crud flows throughout the entire transmission and TC. To me, it is not a good idea to reuse any TC, but i suppose that a lockup TC counld be more problematic. There just isn't a good way to get the inside totally cleaned out. I would change TC on a chevy also, but that is just me. The only way I would skimp is if I really counld not afford it, but I would always worry about how long it would last, and if TC shelled, then another rebuild would be necessary.

The TH400 is probably the strongest automatic transmission ever made. I've known a few (independent) racers who, instead of investing in building a TH400, would just grab one for a hundred bucks (some years ago) from the junkyard with no more inspection than looking at what's in the pan. Plug in the modified valve body that got reused over and over, and off to the races. You can flush those simple torque converters well enough with just a solvent wash stand, and then they'll go for years and years. Then when that trans is shot, another hundred bucks and you're back in business.

The 46R? The converter is relatively weak anyway, and has more moving parts in it. Back in those days I wouldn't have reused a switch pitch converter for a TH400 for the very same reason.

ah....those TH400's were kinda bulletproof. I wonder why, as advancements are made, transmissions get weaker....

That'd be silly. Your savings on transmissions would go straight to the gas station. Get a PATC Viper or Mega Viper if you want your transmission problems to go away. The Mega Viper with a billet converter stuck in its face is on par with a built TH400 -- the Viper with a PATC converter is a little ahead of a stock TH400.
