Default Correct tire size

Is there a way to tell which tire size is correct for my truck? I have a 1996 ram 4x4 which I bought preowned with 265 75 16 tires and I have always used that size but the specs on the door jamb label says 225 75 16 and the spare tire is 245 75 16 (I think this is the original tire). I would think the correct size would be what the label says 225 75 16 but how do I know if the truck has been modified for the 265 tires?

There isn't any modification needed to run 265 in place of 225s, just think how it would look with those small tires on there. ugh. Most of the guys I know run the 265s without any problems at all,

225 was standard.
245 and 265 were factory options.
its very unlikely that any modifications have been done, nor are any needed except for recalibration of the speedo.

you can run 285 on a 4wd, but that's about as big as you want to go without gear change to 4.10, lift, etc.

welcome to DF.
