Default 42 re upgrade?

A year ago, my 2001 v6 2wd ram auto had a bad tranny - at 42k miles. I replaced it with a junkyard unit with 2k less miles than my truck. Now in first gear it sounds like gravel rolling in a steel barrel. Local tranny shops say it is the first gear planetary set & it all needs to be rebuilt. My budget is nearly nothing, so this is a hard 1 to deal with. I know that PACT does great things for the larger units, but I dont want to have a dog slow truck due to odd ratios that a swap would bring. Is there a PACT like option for my 42 re? Or at least is a there a cheaper way to go about fixing this? This is my 5th RAM but the first of gen 2, all others were 1st gen. I am ready to go back or buy a chevy if this keeps up. Please help!
