Default Performance question

My dad's buddy who is a mechanic says that headers aren't worth the money and are only good at around 4,000 or more rpm's. Is there anything else that's a good performance replacment for headers for the same amount of money? I've seen on here and other places that headers are a nice add on for our trucks and I am kinda having a hard time convincing the folks they are worth it. Anyone give me some input? Thanks guys

Longtubes are nice.
Anything that lets air out will let air in sooner in the intake side.

FACT.
They may be most efficient a a higher RPM, but you'll see improvement across most of the rev range for the most part.

Jumping Jeezus on a pogo stick, that guy is full of crap.

Though they don't make them for our 2nd gens any more, the Doug Thorley Tri-Y is specifically designed to make its best power at around 2200 RPM through very efficient scavenging. And it's a header. It'd be damned difficult to pull the power band any lower through exhaust system design, admittedly, but the Tri-Y is an awesome header if you can get one. (Thorley stops making a given header ten years after its application goes out of production. Which is a real bummer for guys like us.)

Some headers are better than others, some suck right out of the gate. I'd rather pour **** into my HVAC box than install Hedman or Hooker headers.

OK thanks fellas. I was trying to convince him that anything to make the truck breath better would be the best thing to do. Unregistered-I've really never heard of tri-y headers before I'll have to go research on them a bit and find some more about them.

Good luck finding a set for sale! I had too many other things drawing on my bank account when they were still available and haven't seen a new set on the market for quite a while now. If you find a place that's got 'em on hand, please let me know.
