Odometer tampering?
That depends on whether it has the digital odometer display or the other physical type. I am thinking that 1998 and newer are the ones that have the digital odometer display. Just a strange thought, I wonder if it has over 999,999 miles on it...
Wrong. MY 1992 VW Golf has EFI but has a speedometer cable.
VW and Porsche vehicles equipped with Fuel Injection from the late-1960s and into the 1970s used a speedometer cable.

VSS is an electroinc input device that sends the signal to a processor (PCM in our case) which utilizes an output device (such as digital display).
The "physical" type is a mechanical device that is operated through mechanical means (such as a cable that rotates, driven by a gear at one end and connected to mechanical diplay).
Depends is an diaper....

its not hard-
its real easy to go to the junkyard and buy a cluster for $25 and install it. this changes the displayed mileage. i've done it on a couple of vehicles where the speedo broke, including the dodge.
on the new models, with the electronic speedo and pcm, the mileage is additionally stored in the pcm, so if you only swap the cluster, the pcm still has the original mileage and the right kind of scanner can display it.
but, if you want to go deeper, simply replace the pcm with a refurbished model from the internet, and email them your VIN and mileage from the cluster and presto, they send you a matching pcm...
i think your only chance of catching all of the above is to hope carfax has a record of sale, accident, registration, etc that captures the mileage.

It has the digital display. My guess is the mileage of 40,000 mi is right and that a REALLY heavy person drove it, in order to blow the driver's side seat seam. And they drove it in a field as valve covers were caked with black dirt. The coolant is either the original or someone poured stop leak in radiator as it was more brown than green and the heater didn't put out. Why they so politely said they would pull in it in the shop to warm it up overnight. The oil pressure gauge was all over the place and couldn't get the a/c compressor to engage. The good- the steering was very tight, the transmission shifted nice. Both oil and trans fluid were very clean, just changed. Overall wasn't maintained well enough for the 5000.00 tag

Just so you know, the cvalve cover bolts lossen themselves very easily on thse engines, and the black dirt could be a combination of driven in the fields and excess oil form valve covers. May want to check all grounds for good connection as this could explain oil pressure and ac comp issues.
If steering is still tight and tranny is good, that is a pretty good indication that it is low mileage.
