Intermittent turn signals

Had a situation a couple of weeks ago that had me just about to go get a multi-function switch.
When I get a vehicle (new or used) I always put heavy duty flashers in the for turn and the four way signals.
On my 96 the turn signals decided to work part time.
Told the wife "There is another $60.00 or so".
Me being a hard headed old fart decided to try switching the flashers around.
It worked!
A $12.00 flasher was all it was.
Darn thing only lasted 12 years.
Moral-don't always assume the usual or worst.
