Default Transmission Fill Tube Removal

I need to remove the transmission fill tube to replace the damaged grommet and hopefully fix one of my truck's perpetual fluid leaks. Most threads I've searched suggest using a wobbly-socket, long extension, drop the cross-member/tilt the transmission, etc. However, the advice seems geared towards those who intend to remove the transmission, and have (presumably) already removed the exhaust in the process.

And that's where my question is: does the exhaust y-pipe need to be removed to access the bolt which holds down the fill tube? The bracket appears to mount to the top of the bellhousing and not the right cylinder head. At least from inspecting the underside of the truck while laying on a creeper, I can't see how I can reach this area without dropping the exhaust, but is it possible with the truck on a lift? Is there an access panel on the floor-board/tunnel?

And, yes, I agree removing the exhaust would be easier...if removal didn't require a sawzall and the replacement of the y-pipe and exhaust manifolds in the process. This POS was abused and neglected by the previous owner (who apparently gouged the fill tube grommet with a screwdriver)...just trying to determine if I can fix this one problem now, or if it will require fixing several other problems just to get to this leak.

Thanks in advance!

the y pipe doesnt need to be removed to remove the transmission. i replaced my transmission without doing so. just pull the trans mount, and that should lower the trans down enough to get the filler tube bolt loosened enough to replace it.

Thanks for the tip. Does this require unbolting the transmission from the engine? It would seem lowering the transmission while attached to the engine will tilt the engine back and put stress on the Y-pipe...will the Y-pipe bend enough for this to not be an issue?

no you dont need to unbolt the trans from the engine. removing the trans mount, leaving the cross member in place only moves that trans 3-4 inches. everything will be fine.

Thanks a ton! I pulled the mount and dropped the rear of the trans. I have a line of sight on the bolt and the rest of the fix should (hopefully!) go smooth!

You can remove/install the tube without dropping the mount and rear of trans. Well, at least you can put it in without......don't ask how I know.....
