Talking 2001 ram 1500 4x2 tranny problems

Hello everyone this is my first post on here, I don't know much about Dodges so forgive me if I sound like an idiot.

I have recently acquired a 2001 Ram 1500 4x2 5.2l. It has a regular cab/regular bed/stock tires. The truck has had only one owner who has never had it serviced...12 years later it still has the factory belt. The truck has JUST over 100XXX miles on it and I'm in the process of doing a major tune-up on the truck (plugs/wires/oil/02 sen. etc)

What concerns me is that at around 55-60ish MPH the transmission starts thunking (im not sure if its the same as slipping or jumping), it feels almost like the rear end is hitting little speed bumps while on the freeway, it feels more predominant going uphill. with OD on the truck feels about the same. The truck does not do any towing or heavy hauling and never has. The transmission fluid is brown but has no burning smell to it so I assume a filter and fluid change is a must. To top it all off there is NO check engine light

I would start with a fluid and filter change in the trans and see how that does.. Have you inspected your ujoints? Also check the trans fluid level when it is at operating temp and in Neutral... Also can you explain a little more about the "thunk." How do you feel it? In the wheel or seat etc.... Also read the plenum sticky at the top of the 2nd gen page...

Welcome to DF.

You might want pull rear differential cover off and see if there's any chunks of metal floating around in there. Probably want new fluids all around.
