having tranny problems
hey, theres a problem with the tranny in my dads 99 ram 4x4 5.2, when driving at a constant speed like 55-60 with the cruise on, it shift out of o/d for a split second then shift back in and it will do it 3-4 times a mile, we though it was the over drive so we shut it off and drove it for a few miles and it did the same thing, he's thinking that the torque converter wont stay locked in. is there any way to fix this?
My 1st trans did the same thing about 2 days before it went south.Get ready for a tranny job.Eventualy the converter wont lock up at all and produces to much heat.Just make sure when you rebuild or replace whichever you prefer to bypass the tranny cooler in the rad and put a big aftermarket unit on.Sorry for the bad news. I've been down that road two..three..four times cant keep track.[:@]
I had the same problem on my 01. It would seem to slip and/or the rpms would jump up about 100-200 for a split second. I had it fixed but it wasn't the tranny. I can't remeber exactly what it was but it cost me about 150 to get it fixed. If you need I can pull up my service records to tell you the exact part if you wish to check it out. -Tyler
Mine seems to do that on occasion, jump 100-200 RPM. It always seems like the TCC doesn't disengage when I press the brake sometimes. Like I can tell its winding the engine down as I brake, and doesn't brake as well as it should.
Could just RPM jumping and other problems be from a fualty TPS?
Also its like when I floor it and let off really quick (like around 4k RPM) that the RPM just sit there for like 2 or 3 seconds, then they drop back down and you can feel the tranny shift. Wierd or normal?

I've got the 5.9 in my 96 and was having the same problem. Did a little research and found that the computer must get a good signal from the throttle position sensor to allow the transmission to stay in OD(TPS located on the throttle body, opposite where the throttle, cruise, and trans cable connect). I sprayed the connection with contact cleaner and scraped the pins clean. Did nothing else, and never once since then has it skipped out of OD. :-)
