Default 2001 1500 Sport Misfire Help!!!

Hey I have a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 Sport. A few weeks ago I got a code for cylinder 8 misfire, cylinder 3 misfire and random cylinder misfire. I cleared the codes but it still ran very rough. I pulled the plugs and did a compression test in all cylinders and they were fine. I replaced the plugs and it ran fine. Then a week ago on my way upstate it happened again same codes but it ran much much worse(the whole truck was shaking because of the misfire). I stopped cleared the codes and it still was bad. I parked it overnight then it ran fine again but still idles very rough. I pulled the plugs and one was burnt up pretty bad already. I did smell a little gas when this kept happening. I was wondering if anybody has had this problem and knows what it may be or if anybody has any ideas about what to do. Thanks for the help.

Well....not much info.

How many miles on truck? Engine? Tranny? How long have you had it? What did the plugs look like? How are wires routed?

There is 168,000 roughly on the truck, original motor, original transmission. I have had the truck for about a year. The first time I pulled the plugs they were all fine but one which was cylinder 3. It was very burnt up and the tab was burnt off in half. The wires are and have been all routed the correct way. And each time I had the problem I smelt a little gas when I first started it or at idle.

Smelling gas may be a clue. Have you checked your plenum lately?

#3 plug was burned, but was it oily as well? Did other plugs look good? How does the inside of distributor cap look?

I have not checked my plenum, what should I check for? And yes number 3 and the others were not too bad at all and after I change them and 3 burnt up again the others were fine. And they were not oily.

Check HERE. Also when you mentioned gas smell, it may be an indication of running rich such as upstream O2 sensor.
