Question Check Engine Light is on, how do I get the codes?

Hi, I have a 97 1500 and the check engine light is on. I don't know how to check for the codes, and I don't have a list of what the codes mean. I have only had the truck for a few months. Any advice is much appreciated!

Welcome to the forum.
On a 97 it's a little harder to pull codes as it does not have a odometer window to read off of.

So you have to count the light flashes. Doing the key dance trick, on/off 3 times and on the 3rd time you leave the key on (you're not starting the engine here), should get the PCM to spit the codes out at you. In theory.

The other method is to take it to the autoparts store and have them read the codes for you, write them down, and get to googling.

Most all auto parts stores will scan for free.
