99 rear diff fluid change how to, synthetic ok?
99 ram 1500 2wd,factory posi, 5.9 engine. how should i go about changing fluid and can i use synthetic gl5 75w-140 and how much fluid does it take?
any GL5 gear lube is fine, oil or synthetic. i recommend walmart brand in the gallon jug as being affordable. they have 80w90 or 75w140. either is ok.
if you have a limited slip (posi), you need the little bottle of friction modifier.
off the top of my head, i think it takes 2-1/2 quarts. its in the haynes manual and the service manual which is in the sticky's at the top.
you can seal the diff cover with RTV or buy a felpro gasket from Advance for about $4-5.

2.5 quarts!? More like 0.125 quarts. Most auto stores sell the 10z bottle of lsd additive, use 4oz (just over half) in your rear diff and your all set.
Edit: I see you meant 2.5 quarts of gear oil, not friction modifier
