Default Racing ignition system?

I have been thinking about putting a high performance system(not a msd) in involving racing wires, cap, rotor, and coil. My question is, is this overkill for my stock engine based on the money I will be paying for these things, or will they improve economy and performance to a desired effect?

Default RE: Racing ignition system?

It is probably overkill, and the money investment probably will not be repaid with any MPG improvement.

The most cost effective ignition mod is to pull out the sparkplugs every 10,000 miles and re-sharpen the electrodes - then install the plugs with the open gap 'indexed' toward the exhaust valve. However this depends on how much per hour you value your labor at.

The automakers have stayed with 'induction' ignition systems because they give a longer spark duration. The key patents on CD ignitions like the MSD and Jacobs have expired and the automakers could use multi-strike if they wanted to.

If you want to try an aftermarket ignition,
consider the Pertronic 'Second Strike'
which keeps all your existing induction system, but adds a second CD strike that further lengthens the spark duration.

It might be better to invest money in a set of long lasting Magnecor wires and irridium tipped sparkplugs, which can pay for themselves by outlasting four or five conventional sets and still sparking at lower peak voltages.
