saving the trans
i got a good deal on a 96 dodge ram 1500 4x4 auto with 182,000 miles on it. i want the trans to last because i know they are known for going bad. Do you guys know of a list of things to do to make the trans last. i was thinking a new trans cooler with electric fan, new fluids, and a upgraded pan. let me know what you think. Thanks
The 47RE is more stout than the 46RE. Just make sure you take care of it. I don't think an electric fan is necessary for the trans cooler as if you make it TOO cool, you get varnish, which is bad. Granted, if you let it get too hot, you get varnish. Install a temp gauge into your pan so you can keep an eye on it at all times.
If you want a transmission that should outlast everything else on the truck get a MegaViper, pricey, but probably worth it.
You can rebuild yours with upgraded internals and have a much better transmission too.
Deep pan for more fluid, trans temp gauge to keep an eye on temps.

Varnish due to overcooling is not an issue. Heat is the enemy of any transmission. Additional cooler can only be helpful. E-Fan is nice, but is neutral on tranny life.
Keeping fluid and filter changed on regular basis is the best thing you can do. An optional external cooler can be added for better filtration (around $40 to $50).
47RE is more hardy that the 46 RE as mentioned. Some possibilities to harden the 46 is adding some of the 47 components. The Viper trannys have this included as part of the build.
As Stewie mentioned, deep pan can help as it adds additional fluid, thereby reducing heat load slightly.
