Stop do not rebuild that transmission. A 42RE is not going to handle the power of even a stock 318. I have a 44RE behind a 318 and it has had to be rebuilt once. So I can say with a lot of confidence that a 42RE is not going to work. Listen to what others are telling you and just get a 46RE and be done with it. Rebuilding your 42RE is just throwing your money away.

First of all thank you guys for all of your inputs. After more research I have figured out that the 42 can only handle about 7800 lbs vs the 46s 14000 lbs. The real ball buster is I have 2 42res' and 1 47re and money is to tight to get another transmission at the moment. So I guess I am going to have to slam the hood on the project for now till I can afford a 46.

Holding off a little bit for the cash to do it correctly is a better choice. Putting money into something that will not hold up will provide a less than desirable outcome.

You should be able to find a good 46RE carcass pretty cheap, then rebuild it. Upgrade front clutch, planetary set, frictions, servos, and VB kit and you will be happy!
