I've used several different tools to remove the rivets, and they are a b!tch to get out.
Air hammers work well with a nice chisel, sometimes you'll get lucky and you can use a punch with an air hammer to punch out the rivet once the head is off, sometimes you have to drill them out a bit before they'll pop out.

The best air hammer I've ever used is a Snap-On PH3050A unit. It's deceptively powerful and well balanced. I picked mine up on craigslist some time ago from a mechanic getting out of the business. Please note that removing ball joint rivets can be a painful exercise - as was stated previously, best to grind the heads off with a 4" grinder, then use an air hammer with a punch in it to knock the remaining rivet out. As for removing a ball joint on a 4x4 setup, I used a 3/4" Ingersol-Rand impact with a ball joint press and plenty of PB Blaster to remove them. My 1/2" impact did not have enough power to remove them.
