Default Different Tire Size Question

I need new front tires on my 96 4x2 Ram. I have 245/75R16 on all four tires right now.

Can I switch to 245/70R16 on the fronts without anything really bad happening? This is almost the same diameter as the stock 225/75r16 original tires.

I would eventually switch to 245/70R16 on all four when the rears wear out.

The 245/75R16's have some current speedometer error, and the gauge reads about 2-3 mph fast at around 65 mph. For example, the gauge reads 67 but I am actually only going about 65.

Thanks in advance.

Since you have a 4x2 wouldn't be an issue. If you had a 4x4 I would say no because the different sizes (regardless how close they are) put to much strain on the 4x4 system. Just don't go putting one size on one side of the truck (like passenger side) and a different size on the other (driver side) as that will cause issues.

http://s1142.photobucket.com/albums/...t=CAM00100.jpg here is a pic of 245/75/16 left 245/70/16 right, not very fair comparison M/T vs A/T, 245/70 are almost same size(diameter) as 225/75 but little wider, i have the 3 sizes at home if you want a pic for comparison

Thanks for the responses. It sounds like I could install 245/70R16 on the front with no ill effects.

When buying tires online, have any of you used places like Tire Rack or Tire Buyer? Any good or bad reviews?

Interesting looking at them side by side. As a precaution, I always say same size tires on both sides of an axle, no point putting the extra stress on it, regardless how close size might be.

Nice tire on the left btw What I would do for a set!

Tire rack is supposed to be pretty good. You might also want to check discounttiredirect.com , really low prices on tires AND free shipping to boot! Even to cold frosty North Im looking to purchase a set of 315's from that site in the future.

I used Tire Buyer when I got my tires, they had the lowest prices at the time and free shipping. Shop around, prices change. I had no issues with them, delivered in good time, no problems.

Being 2wd there wont be a problem. You could run 205/55/16's up front if you wanted.

I've used www.tirerack.com and www.tires.com several times each for years without a single problem.

Um, correct me if im wrong, but if his speedometer is reading fast, wouldnt smaller tires make it read even faster? If it originally had 225s and someone put 245s on it, it would read 2-3mph slow, he might want to bump up to a slightly larger tire if he wants it to be accurate.

You are correct. I read 3-4 mph slow with 285/75 and original 245/75.
