OP, do you have a Napa nearby? I broke the shaft on my original PS pump over a year ago. Picked one up from Napa (original was core exchange) and it's still a gooder. I wheel my rig on rocks and trails regularly.

I recently did replace my steering gear box with a Redhead. Core exchange is $150, iirc, so total cost for Redhead is $327+shipping costs (dual shipping $68 for me). I added a cooler also and all I can say in the last week is that it behaves much better.

So there are some options for you to consider among the others.

For the Borgeson I thought you had to change the steering shaft?

wow... that is quite a difference... not really a couple dollars! the remanufactured one is like 70 bucks! well I'll see how this one lasts... if it fails in a couple months I'll see if I can get the new one but I'm afraid to do that if it fails again! I was hoping there was a common cause for this that was something else contributing to the issue.

ahh well... vehicles are money pits anyway.

Thanks for all your replies! I'll continue to check and reply in case someone has an idea.

Also I used carquest brand steering fluid.

Everyone I believe is referring to the steering box, although considering the less-than-reliable tech that is in those boxes, you'd be well-suited to replace that while you had your pump off too, granted that you wouldn't want to be digging into it again anytime soon......

Well for now it seems to be working... there is no whining or any noise being generated when I turn... that hasn't happened for a long time!

thanks for all the replies! Next time it happens (and it will) I'll post again and see if anything new has come up.
