Default Dodge 2500 Hesitation

Hello,

I was wondering if someone might have an answer to this problem. I have a 2000 Dodge Ram 2500 with a 5.9L (gas) 4x4. The truck will start fine and idles well (600 rpm). This issue started about two weeks ago, when the engine is cold or the ambient temp is say around 40 or so; when I do a mild or hard acceleration it develops a hesitation and I can hear it back fire through the throttle body. The check engine light will flash on and off 6 maybe 8 times then go out. When the engine is warm or the temp is higher the engine runs great. Last week I took it to the local Dodge dealer for an oil change and asked them if they would check it out. That time the check engine light came on and stayed on.They told me the error code was for a miss fire in cylinder 6; they said the plug was a little loose, so they swapped 4 and 6 around but didn't change anything (meaning it didn't miss on 4).They tightened the plugs down, but were a little puzzled as to what the problem might be. They guessed it might be dirty injectors, maybe. I don't see what that would have to do with the temp. Also to add, it had new plugs and wires and cap about 10,000 miles ago, I used throttle body cleaner and gas additive also. Any ideas?

Not sure if the truck has a cap and rotor system, but if it does, that could very well be the problem. Had the exact same problem with a Tahoe I used to have and that was the culprit.

Time for a comp test to be done on the motor see what going on. Have a read through the "be all end all plenum" thread as well.

Thanks for the reply. Yes it is a cap and rotor system. Certainly a good place to start.

my guess is its not the cap n rotor, more so something computer controlled. like the injector or a sensor

I'm just thinking out loud, but if it backfires through the the throttle body, then an intake valve isn't closed when it's supposed to be. Check compression and/or get a vacuum gauge and hook it up to port on intake. You can get general idea of engine health watching the needle on a vacuum gauge along with cylinder compression.

Well found the problem. Big Red Dodgie had a cracked cap, bad rotor and a cracked coil. She purrs on all 8 now, thanks for all the advice.
