4 wheel drive
I was wondering if anyone has any problems or difficulties putting their truck into 4 Lo. Its hard to tell when the truck is in 4 Lo just form the stick. Sometimes i grind the gears, now thats not a good thing.
Are you following this procedure.....
From the 1998 Owners Manual: Transfer Case Shifting Procedure:
2H to 4H or 4H to 2H
Shifts between 2H and 4H can be made while the vehicle is moving or stopped. If the vehicle is moving, shifts can be made at any speed up to 55 mph. This shift will be easier if you momentarily release the accelerator pedal. Apply a constant force while shifting the transfer case lever. NEVER drive in 4H on dry, paved roads.
NOTE: During cold weather (below 30 F) it may be more difficult to shift the transfer case while the vehicle is moving. If so, stop the vehicle and shift. Move the vehicle slightly forward or backward to complete positive engagement of the gears.
4H to 4L or 4L to 4H
Slow the vehicle to under 3 mph (5 kmh), shift an automatic transmission to N (Neutral) or depress the clutch on a manual transmission. Shift the transfer case lever to the right and pull firmly down into 4L. Do not pause in transfer case N (Neutral).
NOTE: Pausing in transfer case N (neutral) in vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission may require shutting the engine off to avoid gear clash while completing the shift. If difficulty occurs, shift transmission to Neutral (N), hold foot on brake, turn engine off, and THEN make the shift to desired mode.
Do not attempt to shift to or from 4L while transmission is in gear or clutch is engaged.

Yeah i do have it in nutral, but the main problem i have is knowing when it is in 4Lo. Are the gears just in a strait line, or do you have to move it like a manual trans. to where you have to move it side to side?
You should feel it when you step on the gas...Its a very very different feel and you dash light should light bottom right of your gages. If it isnt in 4Lo then stop and try it again.. It should be up and a little to the RIght(?) ....Damn been too long since i used lo....I use High allot dragging my boat up wet ramps not Lo.. IF it isnt kicking in it might be the sylonoid on the axle..there was a thread about that a month or so ago.
To get to 4lo (from 4hi), you have to move the lever to the right and then pull all the way back (quickly) on it till it won't move anymore. I always manage to do this quick enough to avoid getting caught in neutral.
The pattern looks like this:
2hi---|
------|
------|
4hi--|__
---------|
------N-|
---------|
--- 4lo--|
Yeah, it's a sucky diagram. But apparently ASP forums don't allow for blank spaces. [&:]
That's on my 94, with a 241D transfer case. I'm not sure what year your truck is. Maybe the pattern is different. It should be diagramed out on your ****.

If you have trouble getting into gear, take your foot off the brake and let the truck roll a touch, then try it again. I've found that the NP231 case in my 98 can be a touch finiky (sp?) and I'll need to do this from time to time (I don't know what year your truck is, so I can't say what case you have). I miss the NP241 I had in my old Ramcharger...that shifted so much nicer than the 231.
