Welcome to DF. 2002 models with the 5.9L V8 were a bit of two worlds, the body style of a 3rd generation Ram with the engine/transmission and a few other parts from the 2nd generation Ram. Will move you to the 2nd generation, but you may want to poke around the 3rd generation section now and then.

I changed my cam...I have shorty headers, sct tune (canned) and brand new plugs, wires, cap and rotor, no cat, 3 inch dual side exit exhaust, volant cai which is debatable if it's worth it...certainly sounds good. TB is modded to get rid of the ridge and smooth the bores out, kegger mod was done a while ago and I feel like I got my torque back and then some...I went from 9.7 second 0-60 to 8 flat...impressive as hell.
SCT tuner by Hemifever is the best single bang for the buck.
The canned tunes provided work well with the stock engine, and any of the typical bolt-on mods available... you have to be getting into some serious mods before Hemifever tunes need to be customized.
I'm only playing with a 5.2, but you can see where I'm at in my signature.
I agree that the CAI is not needed, just a low restriction filter element.
The key is having complimentary mods, as the benefits of any one mod wont be fully realized until combined with other mods... ie; opening up the intake wont help much if you have a restricted exhaust (just as an example).
