Default My sea foam horror story on a 98 dodge..

1998 dodge ram 1500, 5.9L 360 166K miles on tach, about 9K on motor, don't know how much motor originally had..

Mods before seafoam include:

New plugs and wires last summer, opened throttle body, completely rebuilt and cleaned, new filter, new power steering pump and gearbox, new front end joints all around, new rearend, oil change performed three months ago today, ( too lazy to see what month lol) and a jet chip. Hate all you want I got it for free and it is indeed junk.

I decided to seafoam my pickup. 2/3rds of it into the gas, the rest ( just under half a can) sucked into the break booster vaccuum. Big mistake. Didn't do it slowly, but the truck bogged down slightly and smoked from the throttle body ( helped fixed issue (explain later) and a ton from the exhaust. Shut it off let it sit five minutes and I Ran it on a 4 mile test drive after revving it up to clear some smoke. Noticed smoother and better throttle response. After the test drive I let it sit for a few minutes. Pickup went from good idle to dead instantly. No sputter or anything. First thing that came to my mind was a sensor error. I felt like someone took my baby and dropped it unconscious.

Promptly I started it up again and it ran really rough, I had to keep it at 2K to run. I shut it off, took my chip out, unhooked the battery for a few minutes, restarted, and it still ran bad, throwing a pile of check engine codes. Codes were:

Cylinder misfire, 5-6 and if i recall correctly 4

IAC sensor high

Map sensor high

I have OCD really really bad. My pickup never leaves my dads yard unless it makes weird noises or has check engine codes.

Promptly I ripped the whole engine apart. Throttle body, cables, filters, battery, ETC. First signs of damage was the valley was wet and had carbon. I know this is normal as the Seafoam was doing its job. The map sensor and idle air control was full of wet carbon, I cleaned them out with carb clean, and made the body spotless. My gasket was bad so I found the pieces, glued them back together and traced a new one from cork. This solved the rough idle issue. I'm super lucky I didn't hydro lock my truck. I have a spare engine however I don't want to replace it again, wayyyy to much work, and I got the new one back in 2012. Scared shi*less for my truck I put it back together, plugged it in, and the thing fired right up with no codes, revved it up and it was smooth, took it on a 15 mile test drive, idle and throttle response greatly improved. I then let it sit overnight unplugged when it was -12 and it fired right up the next morning ( usually some hesitation) drove it again and it was perfect.

What did I learn? Seafoam is awsome, some have compared it to eating prunes, it'll be good for you, clean you out, but what comes out afterward probably won't be very comfortable..

do it before you change your plugs, oil, and sensors!!!

For the love of lord don't put it in vaccuum lines, its fine in gas and I've had good luck with it, plus you won't hydrolock, ( like this stupid 17 year old kid almost did)

If you get misfire codes, just run the pickup for a while then erase them, this is normal, but clean your plugs when your done ( mines fine ill just leave it)

Sensor corded shouldn't be ignored, clean them out!!

Verdict: it's the nectar of gods that works wayyyyy too well.

Thanks!

Sounds just like your other seafoam post you posted on here. Lets try to keep the posts consolidated please. You'll avoid further criticism in the future...Glad it's running good now.
