Default steering wheel clunk

I have a 96 Ram 1500 5.2 Auto 4x4. w/ almost 100k on it. Great truck so far, but whever I go into a forward gear, the steering wheel clunks and snaps forward, and a reverse gear it clunks and snaps down. It moves about 1/2 - 3/4's of an inch, but makes a pretty impressive sound. Also, when I hit large pumps it will snap up and down while driving. I checked to make sure the gear box is bolted to the frame tightly, all the drag links, pitman arms and so on don't have too much play in them. Does anyone have any suggestions or have encountered this problem themselves??? Do they have a collapsable column as most cars/trucks do nowdays?? If so, could there be play in there?? Thanks for whatever help you can give!

The steering column is collapsable, so that could very well be the problem. Maybe its not moving in/out like its suppose to be.

Thanks for the help Socha. Someone told a steering column support breaks. Any ideas or leads on that?
