Default Want To Add Power In Near Future

Hey guys,
I have a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 with the 5.9 360 motor. I was wondering what are some good ways to add substantial power? Based on some of the research I understand that for the most part in order to get more bang I got spend more money, but are their any cheap ways to do it? If so are they good ideas or risky? I do plan on spending a good bit of money over time but some quick ways to add power would be nice. The exhaust has already been done to the truck (can't remember what aftermarket exhaust was put on since the previous owner had it done) and a cold air intake was put in but that is pretty much all the aftermarket things that have been done power wise.

Would headers be a good start? Do they add much horsepower or is it not worth my money?

Also what kind of things do i need to do for things like the transmission to handle more horsepower?

You won't get anywhere near enough power to smoke the trams unless you start spending some real money.

Put a stock airbox back on if you have and put a good air filter in it. That's as good as it gets. Sell the "cold" air intake on eBay

Do basic maintence first. Plugs wires and the like. What about plenum? O2 sensors?

A tuner, SCT from Hemifever, would give you the most bang for your buck. Especially since you have a 01 with the death flash.

Otherwise save your money up for the real stuff. Cam heads, machine work, valve springs, roller rockers. Pistons, cranks.

The question that will answer all...

Your not gonna make big HP without a full build. Build as in cam, intake, heads, etc. The whole 9 yards. 1 mod in its own wont give you "big" gains per say. Ham Bones suggestion of an SCT is a great one, definitely best bang for the buck. Harland Sharp 1.7 Roller rockers are good for 10 hp and ft/ibs at the wheels and cost about $300, another good bang for the buck.

It all comes down to how much you want to spend. Adding a turbo kit and/or rebuilding the motor with a stroker kit, better heads, cam, intake and exhaust will net the greatest bang for your collective bucks.

As for needed transmission mods with a beefed up motor, check out the lengthy thread of MontyC's transmission corner - some great stuff there..
