Default Engine skipping 5.9L

New problem on my 2000 Ram 1500. Seems like after any heavy rainfall my trucks skips and runs rough. It works itself out of it after a few miles of driving but in the mean time if I give it much gas I get a check engine light while it sputters. Light goes off once it comes out of it.
I am not sure if I have water getting in somewhere or a what. Seems like once it dries out it is fine. Any ideas?

Mike

check the cap for moisture... might want to swap it out with the rotor, or you have a moisture induced mis-fire on the plug wires... you can take a spray bottle and lightly spray the wires at night to see if you can re-create the mis-fire.

Thanks for the quick response...I will give that a look in the morning. I was hoping it would just be something minor. Maybe I lucked out!
If the check engine light came on there should be a code stored right? Maybe I can look at that too.

There should be a stored engine code in the controller from the fault, however you might only be able to check it by the key turn method when the fault is active. I would check O2 sensors as well.

I had a jeep Cherokee 5.9L Limited doing that to me. When I'd go into a car wash or a heavy rain. The problem was water getting into the coil. The coil is mounted on the front of the engine on the Jeep. Anyway sonds like moisture problem to me.

the problem has to be there long enough for the comp to recognize a problem and store the code. if it dies too soon, then it may not be able to reconginze what is the problem. then again, if it's moisture, the pcm may not be able to detect a problem.

I had something simular happen to me. I got water in my distributor and it keep misfiring until it dried. The ce light kept coming on and the code read cylinder #4 misfire. So you can pinpoint the problem sometimes. -Tyler

Thanks for the responses. It finally stopped raining here so I will take a look at it today. Sounds like the first place to look is at the distributer.

i had the same problem, it was my plugs and wires, my plugs were gapped to much, i think .60 when i need them at.40 and then my wires were old. Replaced both and gapped to the right measurement and it has been the beast it was from day 1
