Default HyperTech Power Stat?

If i was to buy one, would it be worht it? It says it lowers the air/fuel temp, and engine temp. Also says suppose to increase the performance. Anyone know what kind of performance its gonna give? and if i should buy it.

It's just a thermostat that is set to open at a cooler temp (like 180 or 160 degrees). They are kinda pricey compared to other t-stats you can buy at your local auto parts store, which do the exact same thing.

The idea behind it as a performance mod is that it lowers your engine temp, which in turn tells the PCM that you are running cooler, so it dumps a little more fuel. This additional fuel is what is supposed to be the performance gain you hear about. Problem with this is if you do not have increased air flow to go with that extra fuel, you might actually be running too rich, which can throw a code to the check engine light. Most people don't see this with a 180, but many do with a 160. Other problem is that the O2 sensors in the exhaust can detect if you are running to rich, and they lean things back up anyway. Moral of the story is, I doubt you will find many people who can say that after installing a 180 t-stat, they noticed any significant performance gain, at least nothing to write home about.

There are benefits to a 180 degree t-stat though. One that is often overlooked is that your trans temps will be cooler. Since the stock trans cooler is in the radiator, keeping your radiator 15 degrees cooler also keeps your trans fluid cooler. I confirmed this when I installed my 180 t-stat. My trans temps averaged about 5-10 degrees cooler from that point on.
Another benefit (I think) is that keeping things cooler is actually better for longevity. This is just my own theory though, I have not data to back that up.

One side affect that I have read about is that your heat might not be as hot when you turn it on in the winter. Mine seems fine though. It might be cooler, but it is still hot enough to get the job done to my satisfaction.

FYI, I have a 180 t-stat (it is the Hypertech Powerstat you mention actually, it came with my Hypertech programmer) just because I like to keep things cooler as I mentioned above, and my programmer called for it.

i've thought the same thing. this would hurt fuel economy a little as well and thought of trying to offset the actual temp by 15 deg somehow to the signal that is sent back to the pcm to test that theory, not sure when i'm going to do it but it's been an idea that's been on the back burner for a while.

I agree with Silver_Dodge.I installed a 180 and lost about 2mpg with negligable power increase. For the tranny temp I installed a stand alone cooler.
