Popping sound still unsolved!!
Sorry it took so long to reply. I made the move with no issues. Yesterday hit black ice and while I made it out without a hitch, the popping is worse. Had it taken to a shop, who said everything is tight and fine. Checked tie rods and bolts. The gear box is brand new. It pops only once when I turn right, as long as I only go right or straight it will not pop in that direction again. Then I turn left, and "BAM", once again only once as long as I go left or straight only. I hauled 2600 pounds last week and it went away, couple days later it's back. Could this be bad shocks?? Seems to come from driver side.
I wonder: You said that with someone else in the truck moving the steering wheel, you could get underneath and hear the pop, so why not invest a few bucks in a cheap automotive stethoscope to use in isolating the source of the sound? With all of that metal to conduct sound it can be a real challenge, but if you can find the direction in which the sound is sharper/louder you can follow it and perhaps get at least very close to the noisy component.
Had a 3500 that the front wheel bearing nut backed off it started out as a pop during turning. So possibly check anything related to that. I'm pretty sure yours is a unit bearing not actual bearins in my case but worth a shot
Is it a pop or clunk? I'm surprised no one mentioned the issue with the steering column(if you did i must have missed it). Major issue with the second gens.
