Default Is $900 a fair price for complete AC rebuild?

I just bought an '01 with a 5.2. It's not my first one, and probably not my last one either. Runs well but the ac compressor is clicking very loudly. It is a constant clicking. If the ac is turned off there is no clicking. Blows cold but I know the compressor is on borrowed time. A shop that has done previous work for me and has been in business 40 years quoted me $900 for the complete job. Is this a fair price? I do all my own work, except for alignments and AC. I could probably install the parts and add freon, but I want it done right and I don't know how to do that type of job so I'm inclined to have this shop do it. I assume the clicking is the piston slapping around in there which leads me to believe that the entire system may be contaminated with aluminum shavings and whatever else so I want to leave it to a professional.

Have you checked the refrigerant level? If it's low it can cause the ac clutch to kick on and off a lot. Could be a bad pressure switch also. Sorry I can't help you on the price. The parts to do it yourself would be around $250.
