It's not as much a big deal because you're not doing a complete dry start.

I dump about half in mine. Because anymore and it just spills out all over the place.

Yeah I really hate those horizontal filter mounts.


Thank you very much everyone for your valuable knowledge. 5qts in my 318ci is actually 1/2 inch past full on the stick so I am going to try the full size filter like I had in my 383ci back in the day. Maybe it is just me but I do not think I have ever had an engine that would take the mfg recommended quantity without going past the full mark.

After 40 plus years of changing my own oil on probably close to hundreds of vehicles I've owned, never pre filled a filter and never had any issues. Just not something I feel needs to be done.
