Default Opinions on external trans cooler?

I'm currently having my transmission rebuilt at a local shop. So I'm looking at upgrading my external transmission cooler. What do you guess recommend.

Part depends on what you use your truck for. Do you tow with it? Just a daily driver? Big tires? Are you wanting to keep the cooler in your radiator or have a stand alone system? Need some more info to suggest a cooler.

Maybe try a B&M transmission cooler, seem to be pretty popular.

What kind of external cooler do you have? The one in the radiator? If you can find a 2nd gen with a towing package, they have an additional cooler in front of the radiator, that mounts to the cross brace. I've picked up a couple for $10 with the brace at pick a part.

My second gen truck has the tow package with the extra trans cooler mounted in front of the radiator, and its a very small trans cooler. I`m sure it helps lower the trans temp some, but I think a larger trans cooler would do a better job.

Some here are using the trans cooler that I linked to above with good results.

I have used both Flex-a-lite and B&M with good success.

One word of caution- if you use the B&M temp guage, the brass T fitting they supply for the sending unit, isn't that great.

If you have hardened lines (most factory lines are), the compression ring doesn't seal well, and the nuts are prone to cracking.

That can cause a small leak, or a catastrophic failure.

Works well on copper tube

I have a Derale on mine, just don't ask me which one i put on there.
http://derale.com/
In this weather I have to cover half of it to get trans to shift in OD.
Cools the fluid down to much even tho it runs thru the radiator cooler afterwards.

You have the transmission fluid running through the external transmission cooler first, and then back through the transmission cooler in the radiator ?. That's backwards of the way its normally done.

The way its usually done is to run the transmission fluid through the radiator cooler first, then out to the external transmission cooler, and then back to the transmission.

With your set up you are cooling the transmission fluid, then heating it back up and sending it back to the transmission ?.

Truck has a factory external one already just wanting to replace it since their hard to flush out and I don't want to take a chance of it having metal shavings from the transmission I just blow apart it had mets shavings in the pan like crazy.

It's a daily drive that I do tow with sometimes it has 35s but planing to go bigger this summer once I get money fit gears then I'll imstall my 7in lift and 38s
