Default 1998 Ram 1500 4 WD

I just picked up a 1998 Ram 1500, 5.2 Engine, A/T, 4 WD. Sweet truck. I noticed during last weeks snow storm it was vey stiff going into 4 WD. Any suggestions?

Please elaborate on "very stiff going into 4WD". What do you mean? Are you stopped or moving when shifting? Shifting into 4-hi or 4-lo? Hopw many miles. Please be a bit more descriptive. Welcome to the forum.

Thanks for the response.

While parked in neutral, shifting in the full range, from 2 WD to 4 WD high or low and back again, the shifter is stiff and hard to move back and forth. Once in gear, it works perfectly. 108K miles.

Is it bone chilling cold where you are? Please add details about your truck in your signature as well as your location so we know exactly what we are talking about.

They don't just flop into gear... it is a deliberate move with more resistance than the transmission.
How is it to shift when you're rolling?

Shifting the transfer cause has to be done firmly and going into 4hi is easier when rolling, unless your tire wear is uneven, that can make it harder to shift. I know it does with my 2500
