Trans issue

Tomorrow I will be heading out to the ole junkyard to scavenge me a new transmission for my 2001 Ram 1500. It's an automatic. However I Adam wondering, if the junkyard doesn't happen to have a 2001 handy, what other years and vehicles have that same tranny? TIA for any assistance.

2000, or 2001 from any 2nd gen ram with a V-8 will be a direct bolt in. (has to be the same drive type though, 2 or 4 wheel drive.) Any from 96 and up, behind a V-8, can be adapted to work, by updating the electronics in the trans. (and the parts are easily available as well.)

Nice. Thanks for the info. Hope my trip is lucrative.

Got the only one they had I think. Came from a 2001 Ram 2500 with a 5.9. From my understanding I will have to replace the torque converter with it as the one from the 5.9 is internally balanced by the torque converter but beyond that, should be a direct fit. Please correct me if I am wrong. I DID get the converter with it, btw.

If you have a 5.9 in your truck, you can use the converter that came with the trans. Balance weights moved from the converter, to the flexplate in 96, I think......

Mine is a 5.2. Will I have to use the converter from the 5.9 or my old one?

The weights are on the flex plate so you can use the torque converter that came with the tranny you just bought. No need to change it.

Any chance that, even tho they are both supposedly the same transmission, the one from the 2500 with the 5.9 would be made a bit heavier duty? I know it makes sense that if it's different it would have a different designation (46re, etc) but worth asking.

Nope. Exact same trans. Its really rather depressing. :D

Depressing doesn't even begin to describe it.
