Default D60/GM 14 Bolt Q's

Hey all,
I recently picked up a Dana 60 front axle out of a 2001 dodge 3500. It's really clean, has 4.10s, great bearing surfaces, repainted, decent ring and pinion wear. Only think it needs is hubs/rotors. The guy I bought it from suggested throwing some Bronco hubs/rotors on it so that I can have locking hubs on my rig, and I like the idea! Has anyone heard of doing this? And what year Bronco should I be looking at?

Secondly, I'm on the lookout for a GM 14 bolt with 4.10s for the rear. My problem is I can't find anything about the width of these axles and I want to narrow down what years/trucks I need to get it from. I understand I will have a speedometer issue and I should use a rear D60 keep it Mopar blah blah ... Point is a 14 Bolt is wayyyy cheaper and easier to find in my area and still bulletproof for my application.

Any thoughts?

What Bronco had a D60?

It will be Ford outers. There is an extensive thread on it at a different 4x4 site. Easy search will bring it out for ya.

There are ways around getting the speedo to work, but of course it actually depends on your year vehicle, which you haven't stated. Yes, the 14 bolt is a good choice for cost and strength, especially if its acceptable that the fab work and lack of other amenities is ok (e.g., ebrake, keep drums or convert to disks, master cylinder). It does have more aftermarket support.

This kind of modification is more plentiful on sites like Pirate4x4.

There was no 8 lug bronco. Be careful cause 88-98 14 bolts are an offset pinion. So it would have to be a 73-87 one but the spring perches will need to be moved as well as shock location s. I'm pretty sure you cant put ford outers on a 01-02 dodge Dana 60 due to the inverted ball joints. Someone who knows more will chime in if I'm wrong

People do 8 lug conversions on Bronco very commonly.

That is a good clarification on the Ford Dana 60 outers. They only work up to 99 for Dodge D60s.

I think closest width would be a 14 bolt from a 99' or newer gm truck. They also have disc brakes.

Hey guys,
Sorry for the late response, I apologize.
Wh1t3NuKle - I have a 99 dodge ram 1500 slt 5.9L v8. Currently running the Dana 44 front and Chrysler 9.25" rear c-clip axle. Bummer I have an 01 d60 but it was such a good deal at $400. Junkyard in my county charges $800 for POS axles missing shafts and such. Ebay usually goes from $800+ for a front d60 so oh well...
Cracksrubi - Thanks for that info, I'll look for a 73-87 axle. I'm not worried about fabrication, have been planning on it.
Snowboundrmk - Looks like I can't use an axle from that late due to the offset pinion.

The price on that axle is nothing to complain about. While you wouldn't be able to utilize converting to spindle and hubs, you realized that same axle has been used on Baja rated 2nd Gen Diesels?

They aren't pansy axles. However, not knowing your application makes it like throwing darts.

Yeah, I'm pretty happy about the price, and I know its a strong axle. My application is rockcrawling. Building a low center of gravity rig that can run 37"-40" tires with 1 ton axles, a custom fabricated off road utility bed, frame bobbed to the perches in the rear. Lots of other plans.

Well, don't ever click on the link to my build thread. Similar ideas actually, but you have some catching up to do. haha

Given the rock crawling as a target, sell that axle and start looking for a high pinion... Of course, there are other factors that can lessen the need for that though.

Make sure you start a build thread or something. A couple of us have one and they are in the Discussion forum.

Yeah will do! I'm a little bummed about not having a high pinion but you could call me a victim of circumstance Look for a thread around June, gotta finish gathering parts this winter and then I'm driving back home where I have more tools and a second ride to get to work (79' Cj-7). Thanks for the help!
