Default transmission fluid

I have a2001 ram 1500 with a46re transmission. I changed the transmission fluid and filter and put in 4 qts of fluid. The manual says 4qts but it is not even touching the dip stick. Does anyone know how much fluid it takes.

How are you checking the level? Engine warm? Level ground? Trans in neutral? IIRC, about 6 quarts comes out when dropping the pan.

If you are checking like your supposed to, just start adding more and checking it every so often till it reaches the correct spot on the dipstick.

4 qts is what the manual says because it is a safe starting point. they knew more than 4 would come out but by starting you at 4 qts they remove risk of over filling. start at 4 and go from there. it also depends how long you let it drain. i drained mine for over a week while servicing seals and transfer case and got 13 qts out.
