Default Backup Light Switch problem

My reverse lights are not turning on when I shift into reverse. I pulled the connector off and jumped the wires. Lights came on. ( So now your thinking its the switch ) I pulled the switch out , plugged in the wires and then pushed the spring loaded ball of the switch into the body and the lights still didnt work. Pulled the plug off and spread the male pins apart and put it back together. Worked the switch and the lights came on. (So now your thinking problem solved, right?) Put it all back together, jump in the truck and shift it in and out of reverse. The lights will sometimes work. When they dont work I have to move the shifter around (while still in reverse) to find just the right spot to get them to light. So ( finally ) heres the question.....Could my switch have a dead spot in it or could there be something wrong inside the transmission that is not fully engaging the switch? Anybody have a similar problem?

Yes, it is possible that the switch is flaky. A spot where the contacts are worn or dirty.

Thanks,
I was wondering just how far the ball bearing is pushed in to operate the switch. I seem to recall that GM and Dodge use the same switch. The GM costing half as much? Ever heard of that?

Nope, not heard of that but I can believe it. But you can prob do better with a generic from an auto supply.
