Default Getting Access to Heater Blend Door - Remove dashboard?

1997 Full size Ram 1500

I need to get to to the blend door for the heater to see why I'm having trouble consistently getting heat or turning off the heat. I've seen a decent video on youtube that goes through the steps but I'm a little uncertain about the steering column. What do I need to do to the column to be able to pull the dashboard away? Is it as simple as removing two bolts that hold the steering column up?

You may be able to see what you need to see just by removing the glove box. You're not getting at the blend door that way, but the bits that make it move will be visible.

Snag yourself a copy of the factory service manual here. It's a handy thing to keep around.

How is your dashboard? I can see my blend door through a well placed crack in the dash. Also, I noticed with the radio out and a flashlight it's pretty easy to see it. If you have an aftermarket radio that comes out easy it may be a quick way to sneak a peak. I used the radio hole back when I was fighting similar issues. Wasn't the bled door and I still haven't solved it so I'm not much help.
