So I just bought my son a 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 Sport. It has 200K miles on and still runs pretty good. It needs some work on it. It is his first vehicle. With the amount of miles on the truck what type and grade of oil do you all suggest? Should I go full synthetic?

 

Full synthetic has a smaller molecule than conventional oil and will find a way out of an engine if it's not sealed well. With 200k i would stick with conventional or only part synthetic. Where do you live? Hot or cold climate? You may consider running a thicker weight oil. Do you know if the fuel pump was replaced? I would replace it before it dies on the road somewhere.

 

Also read the plenum sticky. I personally would stay away from synthetic with that many miles. Read up in the FAQ section. Lots of information there that will answer 99% of your questions before you ask them.

 

I live in Houston, TX so it gets pretty hot here. Yes it has a new fuel pump.

 

Run a thicker conventional oil.

 

15w40 Castrol high mileage is amazing
