Plenum gasket?
Hello,
I ran across this site today and am very disappointed...
that it took me so long to find it. What a great site!!
I have a question about my '99 Ram 1500 that kinda sounds like this Plenum gasket.
When accelerating (approximately 2500 rpm and up) I hear a noise almost like if you are driving a manual and you are accelerating in one gear too high. I don't know if I would really call it a "ping" like I have heard from others. It's almost like a gurgling sound. I do notice I lose oil - right around 1/2 quart every 3000 miles. Is what I am trying to explain sound like this gasket?
If anyone has had this problem is there anything else I should be listening/looking for?
Thanks,
Mugs

When mine went bad in my '97 it would rattle when it was idling. Then with it running take the oil fill cap off and the rattling would quiet down.I think it was sucking the oil away from the lifters.
you can check your plenum a couple of ways, one being to take off the breather tube and see if there is a vacuum there, if there is, it's leaking. another and better way to confirm it is to pop off the TB and look down the intake with a mirror and look for oil pooling on the bottom of the intake. an oil film is normal, pooling is not. this will cause pinging and excessive oil consumption. 1/2 quart in 3000 miles doesnt sould like much but it could be less if your plenum is leaking...
check out the DIY forum for a repair link, it's proven to be helpful to a few who have used it.

I have more to add to our PM discussion. My truck is an automatic, and it will lurch while shifting or will slam itself down a gear and rev really high. I can't drive with the cruise control on, because when I hit an incline it will downshift very quickly and almost redline. I caught it the first few times and tapped the brake quickly to turn off the cruise. I am going to try your breather check tomorrow, but I'm still convinced my truck is suffering from a pan gasket problem and possible cracked heads.
