I have an 01 2500 4x4 with a 46re that was my fathers old truck. A few months back it lost rev/low, i pulled the pan hoping it was something simple like a filter and found the end of a snap ring in the bottom of the pan and a good amount of other crap stuck to the magnet and what looks to be bushing/bearing material. My question is where did the snap ring come from .. im just trying to get a better understanding of what does what inside this trans before i crack it open.

It most likely is the wavy snap ring from the od direct drive clutch unit.
Here is really good series on rebuilding the 46re Watch the whole series first. Then watch and disassemble your trans with the series and you should
have no problems.
