Default Dodge Ram 1500 V10 conversion

G'day

I am currently researching into doin a V10 conversion on my '95 5.2 1500 ram.

I got a few questions i was wondering if anyone here could answer.

My truck has a 46 RH 4 speed auto trans, Will this bolt up to and handle the torque of the V10?

I have just fully rebuilt the 9.25 diff with a Brand new tracloc and 4.10 gears. Will it be strong enough?

Would it be easier to get a custom loom built and use a aftermarket computer or go with a standard loom & computer.

They truck will mainly be used for towing of a 30ft goose neck race car trailer.

Please advise if i may have over looked anything important or where i may find parts. (I'd say i would have lol)

Thanks in advance

Simon

No and no.

Yes, but not for your intended use (30 foot 5th wheel trailer)

Use the factory parts off a V10 donor truck.

I'm not going to tell you a V10 powered 1/2 ton won't pull that 5th wheel trailer, but a properly equipped 2500 is much better suited for the job. Bigger frame, bigger brakes, full floating 60 70 or hybrid 80 rear axle, heavy duty cooling (engine and tranny) etc. etc.

welcome to DF!

with that kind of load, i'd go with a 3/4 ton diesel or V10, the 1500 truck with a 360 could probably handle it but the 3/4 ton truck is built stronger than the 1/2 ton truck for such loads. you'd probably rather be wrenching on the car instead of fixing the tow truck...

if your dead set on the v10 swap, i'd put in a 47RE tranny, i'm not sure if it'll bolt up or not but it is definately the stronger tranny.

there is a company called www.APSprecsion.com that can make you a bullet proof tranny that should be able to handle the v10 power, and also www.krcperformance.com can build you a 408 stroker motor that will make more power than the v10, very suitable for towing.

I agree with everything said above. And to be quite honest with you, you would be better off just selling your truck and buying a 3/4 ton V10 equipped Ram. Being that you're in Australia though, that may be a problem. I'm not sure what they have for trucks down there, but you may be better off finding some sort of 3/4 ton diesel equipped vehicle. I say that, because it would be able to handle your trailer, where as your 1/2 ton probably won't be able to (because of the axle, springs, brakes...things mentioned above). It would also be much more safe for you, for others on the road, and for the trailer/car you're towing. Not to mention the conversion is very time consuming, and can be wrought with wiring and electrical gremlins.

Another issue you may run into is the frame rails. They may be too narrow for the motor and V10 mounts. In that case, you may have to have some fabbed up.
