Hey, I have a 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 5.9L 360. I recently got a new transmission from O'reillys. I put it in myself. I got it in and everything connected. Then I started having trouble with it first not wanting to go into gear. I could mess with the throttle valve cable and it would kick into gear. I ended up going to dodge and getting a new cable but before I got it put in, I was backing it into the shop and had to put it in 4 wheel drive and it burnt the fluid in the transmission. Now I've changed the fluid and filter and put the new cable on and you can start the truck and put it in gear and it does nothing. you give it gas and it'll only go up to 4000 rpm but never kicks in gear. It won't even go in manually. Any ideas?

i doubt it will work, but you could try adjusting the band... given the fluid is burnt i dont think its a linkage issue. sounds more like the converter wasn't seated all the way and the pump fried. was there metal or clutch in the fluid when you changed it?

 

There were no metal flakes in the fluid but clutch in the bottom of the pan.

 

did it make any whining noises?

the pump is the easiest thing to mess up with on a new transmission. i grew up with mechanics and they beat that into my brain the first time i touched an automatic. make sure the converter is all the way in, keep turning it till it goes all the way in. i spent 5 minutes turning the converter and pushing it in. i'll admit i was shocked when it went in several times after i thought it was in and after i was convinced it was all the way in they still felt the need to check... but it was in by then.

no metal is a good thing, i would go ahead and try adjusting the band. if that don't do anything and you've rechecked everything is properly connected and fluid level is good, then i would pull the transmission back out and either check the pump or file a warranty claim.
