I am just about to order the MSD wires....
I called Summit Racing and customer service said they are not a universal kit and that they are made for the Dodge Ram 1500 5.2L

Is the senario just take old ones off and put MSD's on... or?

Racinfan, you seem to speak highly of the MSD wires... any problems installing them?

yes, remove and replace each wire one at a time. that is the easiest way to swap them out. I've had them on my last 3 motors and have had excellent results from using them.

one suggestion is to get some 8mm wire separaters and file them down so the 8.5's will fit in them. this will keep the wires away from the exhaust and it will look much better.

actually the coils are pretty good and the spark box's are also good. one drawback to the 6a spark boxes (and off-road box) is that they will go thru your ignition componenets a little quicker than a stock system since they are providing more spark per revolution (3 bursts per fire if I remember correctly).

the 1st thing I noticed was the motor reved easier. to me that equals a better burn at low rpm's and more hp. is the hp noticeable? probably not since the truck weighs so much and the % of gain is not that great. Is it worth it? my opinion, yes.

 

I have a MSD6A box and Accel universal wires. unless your rig has alot of mod's a MSD or Accel coil is not going to help much. I only put the 6A box on to help with spark knock and a little of a MPG gain. Also pulling the spark plug tubes off will help get the wires and plugs in and out easier.

 

So I guess what everone is saying is, a coil real has no differance unless you have alot of mods and as far as wires go it is just a matter of looks as long as they are 8.5s. That is basicaly why I was asking. A all red or yellow secondary color in the engine compartment? Maybe the sheilded Accels to go with braided hoses!![sm=confused06.gif] Well what ever it is, will have to wait cuz I just bought a K&N CAI. Thanks peps.

 

I disagree... a stock coil will provide X volts (dont know excatly how much) to your plug when it's firing, stock coils are rated for about 25kv from what I understand, aftermarket coils are rated from 35kv-45kv providing up to 10k more for the ignition system. more spark means a better burn in the cylinder during combustion. the more you burn, the more effecient you are and the potential for better peformance is there.

years back I was experimenting with performance on a '85 honda prelude... a coil helped out a lot. I never did a dyno run on it but I used a pretty steep hill that was on my way to work to test out different mods. the coil helped out a lot! small motor, lower HP so the difference was easier to see. get a coil!

but if you think about it.. if you go with the MSD coil and wires now.. then down the road you come across a 6A box for cheep you can pick it up and already have the required upgrades to run it.
