LED 3rd brake light won't turn off when truck is off

So I purchased a aftermarket LED 3rd brake light for my truck and when I went to plug it in and screw it own the light was on but my truck wasn't turned on ,so i was thinking ok maby my dim switch is on or my door is open . Sony turned both the dim switch off and closed the door and it still was on and won't turn off anyone know why it stays on when the truck is off and how can I fix that .

Moparite 07-09-2017 07:36 AM

Truck info? What aftermarket light did you get?

dbbd1 07-09-2017 09:20 AM

Even if your truck is off, when you tap the brake pedal, the brake lights will light. Do your other brake lights come on too?

[QUOTE=Moparite;3349281]Truck info? What aftermarket light did you get?[/QUOTT

The truck is a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 2 wyd with a 5.2 and no nun of the other brake lights stay on and the actual center light doesn't come on unless I hit the brake just the lights on the 3rd brake light

dbbd1 07-09-2017 10:58 AM

So you're saying that it's the clear/white cargo lights that are on?

Yes those stay on even when the truck is turned
Off , I made shire all switches where off white / clear cargo lights still remain turned on at all times

HeyYou 07-09-2017 01:04 PM

Turn the headlight switch, and they will turn off.

Nope , they still stay on when the headlight switch is off the white /clear led cargo lights stay on doesn't matter if the head light or cargo switch is off doesn't matter if the truck is off it stays on ,I actually even turned the truck off turned the switches off and left it like that for a few hours to see if it would eventually turn off and never did

HeyYou 07-09-2017 07:03 PM

Then you have something wired wrong.

Keep in mind, the headlight switch controls the ground for the cargo lamp.

There was know wiring needed when installling the light it just plugged right into the stock connector

Yes, something is wired up wrong. Yours is a 2001, maybe you got a unit for 97 or below. Between 97 and 98, the wiring changed from switching the positive power to switching the ground. Maybe your problem???

oh ok so ignore I pretty much just swap the ground to the positive and the positive to the ground that should fix the issue ?

Moparite 07-10-2017 06:23 PM

Nope , they still stay on when the headlight switch is off
Just to be sure you are turning the knob to shut off the cargo light not the headlights correct? Switching the wires will reverse polarity and may blow the fuse. Led's usually have diodes in them to protect from reverse polarity(if not they will blow). I would contact who ever you got it from.

Just got a new third brake light and I'm having the exact same problem.. did you ever find out how to fix it?

Dodgevity 10-20-2017 07:00 PM

Put the old light back in to see what happens. You may need to add a resistor. LED lights can light with such little current, that any type of voltage drop may activate them.

What you have to do is cut the two cargo light wires and solder then to the opposite color I went through this. So let's say (colors vary this is an example) you have a yellow and red wire for the cargo lights, cut both of them, and solder yellow to red and red to telling and that will fix your problem.

3rd brake light

So did that fix the problem by swapping the 2 Cargo wires

BrownBomber 05-01-2018 10:05 PM

I have the same problem. Switched the cargo lamp wires and it did not fix it.

no they stay bright, I haveit unplugged for now. Have tried 2 different brands because the first manufacture said it was a defective item.

also I switched the wires on the aftermarket 3rd brake light, should I swap the wires on the truck harness instead?

Odd switching the wires fixed mine, but I do know they may stay in but get dimmer. If they do then you need a resistor in the hot wire as LEDs light with very little voltage.

Here's the fix that worked for me

Tried switching wires and must have switched the wrong two. Now “parade” (bright instrument lighting for daytime), dome, cargo and radio don’t work.
Brief research indicates I may have blown my IOD fuse. Arghh.
