Default 1997 Overdrive issue

Hello,

I have a 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 5.9L Automatic. The overdrive button is on the shifter. I have noticed now for quite some time that the overdrive is "stuck" on. As I occasionally pull a small camper with the truck I was wondering if anyone here knows the reason that this could be.

I have been told that there is a relay of some kind and a fuse but it would look like if neither of those were working the O/D would be stuck off.

Also the previous owner broke the shifter so that it is taped with electrical tape to hold it on. The tape goes almost all the way to the button but doesn't cover it up.

Any advice or ideas would be appreciated.

On is the default position, If you want it off you need to hit the button. You really shouldn't tow with the OD on but a small pop up style camper would probably be ok as long as you are towing up a steep grade.
