What about your control arm bushings?
From what I can tell, your due diligent's has payed off. Weak shock will certainly allow for excess play for all components when in motion. certainly worth your while to exchange them. Weak shock will also aid in excess tire wear.
Personally, I bought Gabriel Max-Controls. They are high end cheap shocks, and performance based. On/road.. NOT designed for towing..Ride quality is rough because they are very firm, Think 3/4 - 1 ton truck.
