Check engine light truck stahls
ORIGINAL: banwhalen
The check engine light only comes on when the a/c is engaged. I "rebooted" my truck by disconnecting the neg wire and (after tightening the air breather clamp I found to be loose), it runs ok but once I hit the a/c the check engine light comes on. As far as cleaning the tb, I decided to treat myself to a fastman replacement tb which is due in the next day or so. I also bought replacement sensors (map, tps, iac) to put on the new fastman. I plan on replacing the o2 sensor as well, already bought it. I don't want to look into the intake for oil. It's been a haunting thought ever since I heard about the problem years ago, don't want to deal with it now. My truck does not consume oil, even the synthetic I use and it does not knock when I run premium. It really books for a truck, solid power. I keep o/d off all the time unless I am going on a highway, so it gets it around town. I plan on trying 87 after the tb replacement. I also plan on replacing my plugs as they are 3 years old, they only have 8k on them, but what the fuh. The distributer, wires, and rotor all have only 8k. This truck is pampered. Probably too much. Ironically, the tb is the only thing i neglected over the years.
I had a problem in the past w/the a/c and the technician said it was a loose wire that cause the check engine light to come on. So I guess I am going to have to take it to mopar to have it fixed.
thanks for all the advice everyone, I really do appreciate it.

I will have to see what mood I am in when it comes time to put on the new tb. I do sound kind of chicken, better yet paranoid. If I find puddle of oil, then it would definitely be the last straw with truck and I'd have to sell it. I don't want to find, yet another, mopar f up with this truck. I really wouldn't spend the bucks to get it fixed, I'm not going to replace the gasket myself. Waa waa waa. How sad is it that we spend 20+ thousand for a truck with a motor that has a known manufacturing defect. Had I known it at the time, I would have stayed away from the truck.
So after reading all that, you'd probably agree that I should not look for more trouble. Gawd knows what it would cost to fix that manufacturing defect.
How many of you found the oil in the intake? Is it really a rampant problem with mopar motors or just some. I cannot believe they were allowed to get by with that flaw and not have class action lawsuits against them over shoddy manufacturing.
I don't get it, my 73 Charger is more dependable than my 98 Ram. I ran the hell out of that car when I was a teenager, and it still runs awesome some 27 years later. I bought it in 79.

The whole plenum thing was kinda dumb of them.
But I could see how it could get by. The intake is aluminum and the pan was steel (if I remember right). So they expand and contract at diffrent rates, thats what the gasket tears [&:]

Everyone, I really do appreciate your advice. I do value your opinions.
Here's the scoop. I took it out for a spin this afternoon, sans stereo playing. All's quiet on the knocking front. I hear the injectors, I think on acceleration ever so slightly. No knocking. Course I run premium always have, I know I get the lecture from my father about how he thinks it's a waste of bucks but the truck runs great with premium never knocks. It knocks some using 87 and 89. Hopefully with the new tb I can drop back to 87.
idles much better since I rebooted the truck two weeks ago. I guess, the pcm's are like the network equipment I run at work, needs rebooting now and then. I do get the the check engine light when I engage the a/c, however. So I will deal with that w/mopar.
my new fastman tb will be here in the next day or so and I can get it installed next weekend. Dan said he shipped it on the 14th.
Hopefully the truck will run even better with the new tb and map, iac, and tps sensors I bought.
